Research

Because my group and I are filming our music video in London showing various popular iconic landscapes, it is essential for us to conduct research on if we are expected to have permission for filming. Below shows screenshots of ideal locations to film in London.

Below is a screenshot of one of the locations that my group and I will be filming at (South Bank).

Below shows a 'Film London' application form that I have filled out, granting me access to film in London.

Idea Treatment

My group and I are creating a music video to a melodic Hip Hop song. The song is about being in love and getting high and we wish to portray element of this within our music video. Our video will have a series of settings, characters, props and shot types. This video will be a hybrid between narrative and performance it will have a linear narrative showcasing a couple’s relationship, it will demonstrate the highs and lows in a relationship which relates to the song as it is about being in love, however it will also intertextualise the highs and lows of getting high. This video will also contain many aspects of performance that will take place in urban areas such as busy high streets, tunnels, and hidden spaces. We have chosen these particular locations, as it would be a convention of the Hip Hop genre. We intend on using very stereotypical hip hop costume for the male and female characters, this means that the male will appear to have wealth by wearing the latest and most stylish costume associated with this genre. The female will purposely be wearing revealing costume as this will create an over sexualised image of her which is a common idea within the Hip Hop genre. We will be using very realistic props within our music video however they will all have relevance and be used to create a sense of verisimilitude. Examples of the props we will need to use will be mobile phones, a roll up spliff, a vase and others that will add to a setting a used within a scene. The most important feature within our music video that will cause it to reach it potential and allow us to capture and emphasise on aspects of the video that are necessary will be the camerawork and editing. We will be using lots of camera work that is commonly used within the Hip Hop genre in order to make our video fit in with the genre. The shot types that will be used the most throughout the video would be close ups, wide shots and long shots, this is because the create emotion such as isolation, they can promote empathy with the audience and they also capture the setting surroundings as well as those being the main shot types within hip hop music videos. We will also be using; low angle shots, panning and zoom in’s to create the image of superiority. The editing techniques that will be used will be slow motion and black and white filter and these will exaggerate aspects of the video create a more intense atmosphere. All of these aspects combined will allow us to create a music video that will be emotive and powerful in regards to the narrative and performance as well as fitting in with the genre of hip hop and will look as realistic as possible using our knowledge of editing and camera skills.

Music video inspiration

After deciding on the song choice and genre of the music video we needed inspiration from a music video that is similar to our vision. I we looked at various different hip-hop music videos to gain inspiration. I came across 'Kanye West-All falls down' which is a sub genre music video which holds a combination of Hip-Hop and R'n'B, I also looked at 'Tyler the creator- Yonkers' as it is a interesting narrative and holds various different shots. I chose these because they are not ordinary Hip-hop videos they are both sub-genre and have odd shots/effect/editing techniques that would not be expected in a hip-hop music vide for example in the Kanye West music video a point of view shot is used throughout the whole video and the Tyler the creator video shows the artist by himself doing strange activities such as eating cockroaches. I hope that we can incorporate alternative concepts into our music video.

Both videos follow the codes and conventions of a music video which include having

-An ongoing beat
-An artist rapping
-Diagetic sound (to create a sense of verisimilitude)
-Portrayal of life e.g. Tyler having suicidal thoughts and Kanye being used for his money by his girlfriend.

In order to start making our music video we needed to decide altogether on a music video. We decided to choose 'Pharcye-Drop' because we all have analysed this video in previous coursework and concluded that the editing used does not convey typical stereotypes of a hip-hop music video and therefore felt as if we could create something similar. We chose to analyse the music video whilst in front of a green screen, each of us commented on different aspects of the music video that we felt was valid.

The following images show D'mee and I filming our analysis with the help of a media technician in Harris South Norwood's TV studio.

The following Youtube video shows D'mee, Georgina and I analysing the music video.

This video shows our outakes; I decided to edit this to show that presenting in front of a camera is actually very hard. From my experience of this I can say that I now have an understanding of what it is like to be in front of a camera whilst in front of teachers, friends/group members and technicians, it is extremely agonising, so much so that in the end I had asked everyone to come out of the studio until I had finished. I as well as my group members made plenty of mistakes when talking; we became frustrated with ourselves, became impatient but to overcome this when we made mistakes we often carried on and we attained advice from our technicians and support from one another

Shopping list for our music video

For this task we were asked to create a realistic shopping list for our music video; we would include things like what we will be using to create the music video, what the characters will need to perform etc.

Choosing a music track

In the following task we were asked to individually select three possible song choices that are not copy righted; I chose "Be Lifted by Altered Minds", "Hate Sex" by an unknown artist and lastly "Case of Misery by Jared Jones". We then had to chose our favourite song from the three and present it to our group. Finally we came to a final decision and chose "Be Lifted by Altered Minds". Choosing a Music Track

Target Audience Research

In the following I have conducted target audience research by asking hip-hop fans from the ages of 16-25 what their favourite music videos are, why that specific one is their favourite and what they would expect to see in a hip-hop music video.

Student Music Videos

I came across this video when browsing on Youtube for inspiration for my group and I's music video. This music video is by a group named Flyorder and produced by a company named Jstar entertainment, the song is named 'Papers from trees', it is an English sub-genre grime accompanied with rap genre. As soon as the music video starts a shot of Carnaby Street is shown which automatically allows the audience to know what location the music video is in. After a group of young black youths are walking along the street looking around at shops which implies that they are prepared to spend a lot of money, as Carnaby Street is known for shopping. One of the boy's start to speak, this allows the audience to identify what role he plays in the music video, as it plays on it is obvious that he is the main character also that he is possibly the only artist as the rest of the group merge into the background and he is singled out whilst rapping.

The lighting creates verisimilitude within the scene as London is usually dull and grey, the scene has not been edited to look darker, lighter etc because they wanted to emphasise the location that they are in despite the 'Carnaby Street' sign exposed. The next scene shows breakdancers flaunting their talent this is most likely in South Bank, the dancers have been edited and slowed down to emphasise their talent, again this emphasises the significance of London culture; breakdancing is an unrecognised talent because of the time period that we live in, in the 1980's people embraced it and was seen almost everywhere and especially in the media, therefore most people that still breakdance do it in urban areas such as a small area Trockadero where people can express themselves through their creative talents such as graffiti or dancing. As the video goes fast cuts are used to show the different shops on Carnaby Street such as Office, Refuel and Vans. From this I can understand who their target audience is because the stores shown are those that youth would wear also the members of the group are young and wear brands that regular teenagers would purchase.

They are also filmed entering G-Star Raw which is not a store that regular teenagers would walk into but would admire and look up to people that have enough money to go into, this gives the artist value and respect amongst the target audience. There is a point of view shot where the camera man appears to be in the centre walking along with the group. This allows the audience to feel engaged and actually with the group whilst walking through London.

...

This music video falls under the pop/indie genre. The music video fits the codes and conventions of this genre as the band are in casual clothing, messy hair and overall a casual appearence. The colours used in this music video consists of white (for the environment), pink, purple, yellow, orange, blue and green, which is effective as the white background allows the colours to stand out. The colours shown are those that are in the rainbow and therefore gives off a vibrant and happy atmosphere which accommodates with the music. Props used such as the guitar, drums and and a main singer are also are conventions of an indie/pop music video which creates realism, other props such as the photo frames and paint pots/brushes are artistic tools which keeps the audience intrigued. The editing used is excellent and cleverly used, for example the band are dancing within the photo frames which is used with a green screen, although it is easily done students are unlikely to edit something like this together as it may seem complicated.

...

The third music video that I have chosen is by Beyonce and named “who runs the world” which is a pop genre so would typically involve creative shots, choreographed dancing and revealing clothes.

The video starts off strong as straight away the camera jerks from side to side and the camera goes static which gave me the idea that I was watching the news and a camera man was trying to get away from a possible attack and the news feed was interfered somehow therefore it allows the audience to be intrigued as to what is about to happen. Soon after there is a shot of a girl is dark clothing and fanatical hair who is carelessly hanging onto a tank possibly full of dangerous chemicals, this already gives the audience the impression that she is of a villains character and could be the cause of the news interference.

A shot shows another girl in a field surrounded by dark flowers and tall grass, the character is also is dark clothing and a black cape, which gives the audience the impression that she is the main character, later on we see that on her command other girls rise up from the tall grass and begin to dance on her accord. Effects are used throughout this scene which makes it look l disorientated and gives a sense of disturbia. All of the characters wear dark and revealing clothes which automatically makes them attractive and taken seriously.

The main character demonstrates a drill command which relates to the song message which is that girls are more dominant than boys. Again in another scene the main character is in front of an American flag and a wearing a camo jacket which automatically makes the audience think of the army and relates the importance of women to the army.

Another scene is shown where the main character is wearing a skimpy baggy top and flaunts herself on a sofa whilst in front of a animal head decoration which is used for sex appeal. The main character almost slaps the camera into another scene which is highly effective; the next scene is of the main character in front of a fire background which has been created with green screen this again creates sex appeal and a gothic atmosphere.

The scene is switched to the main character in a bath whilst wearing nothing but underwear surrounded by red water which creates a gothic element which is not a convention of pop which makes me reconsider the genre as well as another scene showing the main character in a bed surrounded by money which is considered to be a hip-hop convention of money and video girls.

Lastly a scene is shown of the girls dancing in a camo attire which insinuates that the girls are ready to battle and challenges people that opposes the songs message .

In conclusion I think this was overall a great video and belongs in the band 4 category because of the creativity, the conventions and the overall effort put into it. The only criticism I have is in the fire scene a studio light is shown in the shot that could have been edited out or filmed again.

The brief

Today we were issued the brief that we have been set for this year. In the brief we are to make a promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promotion video together with two options which consists of a website homepage for the band or a cover for its release as pat of a digipack (CD/DVD package).

I am looking forward to producing this coursework, this is because music videos are highly popular when promoting a song and is important in the music industry. Producing a music video will benefit me when understanding different media elements and using different techniques.

When producing the coursework I will discover new elements of media and the content that needs to be included to make a successful promotional and popular music video.
